Maison Constant
Constant
for Alexandre Constant
Alexandre Constant was born on September 15, 1829 in Autun. After brilliant studies, he moved to Autun with his wife, in a set of buildings that his father had built. He took over the family business by setting up as a banker, in one of the entrance pavilions.
His free time is dedicated to his passions for botany, horticulture and entomology, which have made him one of the most eminent butterfly specialists of the 19th century.
Very involved in local life, he was a member of several learned societies, including the Société Eduenne, one of the oldest learned societies in France, still active today.
The Maison Constant park still testifies today to his love for botany, and presents rare species planted by him, such as the giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and the Ginko (Ginkgo biloba).
A family home
We purchased Maison Constant in February 2023, after a few years looking for that rare pearl.
Our project was twofold: both to have a family home in Burgundy, but also to share this beautiful property with other enthusiasts of beautiful buildings/residences by offering spaces for seasonal rental.
When we found this incredible property, we were immediately seduced by its park and the beauty of the different green spaces, the variety of species present, the harmony of the architecture and the diversity of the places in which it was so easy to imagine: a real favorite.
Restoring the luster of beauty
The entrance pavilions had not been inhabited since the 1970s for the pavilion on the left, and for much longer for the pavilion on the right. The stables and outbuildings need to be completely restored. The house was completely habitable. Our efforts have for the moment focused on the left entrance pavilion, then will continue with some work to refresh the house, maintain the park and continue with the left pavilion, the entrance gate and finally by dependencies.
